Large-Scale Trade in a Songbird That Is Extinct in the Wild

Indonesia is at the epicenter of Asian Songbird Crisis, i.e., recognition that cage bird trade has a devastating impact on numerous imperiled species in Asia. The Javan pied starling Gracupica jalla, only last five years recognized as distinct from starlings mainland Southeast Asia, been declared extinct wild 2021. Up until 1980s, it used to be one most common open countryside birds islands Java and Bali, Indonesia. From early 2000s onwards, commercially bred meet demand domestic cagebird trade. We conducted 280 market surveys 25 markets Bali between April 2014 March 2020, with 15 being surveyed least six times. recorded 24,358 starlings, making commonly observed markets. established that, conservatively, around 40% were sold within week this estimate minimum ~80,000 are Bali. latter represents monetary value USD5.2 million. showed prices low when all sourced wild. It became more varied differentiated combination now expensive wild-caught cheaper captive-bred offered for sale, stabilized 2010s most, if not captive-bred. protected under Indonesian law, there no linked-up conservation efforts place re-establish population islands, although small-scale releases do take place.
